More complex than it looks on the surface

Crank Waterproofing is a certified applicator for many different waterproofing systems. After we analyze your project, we choose the system that works best for your exterior walkways, balconies and roof decks.

A decking project is much more complex than it appears on the surface, from substrate repair to sloping to waterproofing. You can trust us to hold the highest standard of deck repair, inside and out.

There is no limit to the finished look: color stained, stamped, stenciled, or the standard knockdown texture. The choice is yours.

We don’t build on bad bones. No coating goes on until what’s underneath is sound.

The process, step by step

Every job is different, but this is the order the work happens in.

1. Inspect and choose the system

We look at the deck, open it up where we need to, and pick the waterproofing system that fits the surface and how you use it.

2. Demo and substrate repair

Old, failed coating comes off. Rotted framing or plywood gets replaced, so the new system goes on a stable substrate.

3. Flashing, drains and scuppers

New flashing paper at the walls and door thresholds, and drains and scuppers set so the water has somewhere to go.

4. Sloping for drainage

We build in the slope (and crickets where needed) so water runs off instead of sitting on the deck.

5. Waterproof membrane and body coats

The waterproof membrane goes down, followed by protective body coats that take the traffic.

6. Color and finish

Color stain, stamp, stencil or knockdown texture, then the top coat. You walk out onto a finished, watertight deck.

Deck process questions

Do you fix the wood under the coating?

Yes. Rotted framing and plywood get replaced before any coating goes on. A new coating over wet or rotted wood just hides the problem.

Which waterproofing systems do you use?

We are a certified applicator for many systems, including Desert Crete. We pick the one that fits your deck after we analyze the project.

What finishes can I choose?

Color stained, stamped, stenciled, or the standard knockdown texture.

How long does a deck coating job take?

It depends on the size of the deck and how much repair it needs, and each coat needs time to cure. You get a schedule with your estimate.

Can we use the deck while you work?

Not while the coats are curing. We will tell you when it is ready to walk on.
